Geoff got my rings from Kays last year, but when he bought my engagement ring, he bought the main stone separately. He took it to David Adams, the goldsmith on the Square in Fayetteville, to get the ring re-sized and the stone put in. It looked beautiful and he put in a more secure mount than what the store had.
When we needed to get our wedding bands resized, we took them to David Adams. We picked them up today and I asked him about the slight discoloration on my engagement ring. Starting maybe 6 or 7 months ago, the top band of my ring has been turning orange-ish. Jewelers at both Zales and Kays told me it was normal (even after less than one year!) and that I would have to pay to get my ring redipped. I didn't like this news, so I showed it to Mr. Adams (he's the person I would have taken it to to get redipped anyway). He took it in the back and gave it a quick polish. When it came out, it looked perfect! He said all that had happened was that it came into contact with some chemical that caused oxidation. If it starts to turn colors again, I can bring it back and he'll polish it. The other process used by the mainstream commercial stores actually damages the ring over the years if you do it as recommended. I was relieved to know nothing major had to be done to my ring, and very glad I asked a professional goldsmith.
DITTO! We got our rings from a goldsmith - a little mom and pop shop. I actually got to sit down with the goldsmith and design my ring. It was pretty fabulous. I have been meaning to go back there to get it resized, but... you know, not being in UT has made it hard, since that's where the shop was :) Anyway, we love our jeweler, too!! That's what we get for supporting local businesses :)
