Meet Lady Althea

There is someone new living at our house....She's small and had a difficult journey, but I think she's happy.

Geoff and I planted a new tree by our front porch.  She is a Lady Althea, with pink flowers that bloom during late summer. I was afraid we would miss them all this year, but she came with one bloom, and 2 more opened up the morning after we planted her.  She has two more buds, so I'm glad we didn't completely miss the flower season.

If you recall, there used to be a young (but dead) dogwood tree in that flowerbed. Last spring, Geoff was trimming some of the branches that hung over the steps and just decided to pull the entire thing down, as it was completely dead. We've had a stump sitting there ever since.  I'm sure our landlords weren't thrilled about it, and I know I definitely wasn't.  I hated seeing it and thought it made us look like slobs. Geoff finally got the dead trunk out last week with the help of his Jeep, and we went off to the nursery on Saturday morning. Originally, we had planned on getting a crepe myrtle, but we liked the look and projected size of the Lady Althea better.

Out landlords were in town this weekend, and they liked the rubber mulch, and seemed happy that we were going to replace the tree.  Now I just have to hope that the bush next to the house comes back to life.  It went brown overnight last week, and we have no clue why, but the other one 3 feet away is still as green as ever.  We're supposed to get rain all this week from the hurricane down near Texas, so if the bush isn't completely dead, maybe that will help.

  1. Yikes!

My neighbors bought my parents a crepe myrtle after my brother passed away. Their sun died in a car accident about 4 years ago, so it's kind of made my parents and them kindred spirits, you know what I mean?

Anyway, the tree looks like it's going to do great - I can't wait to landscape my yard!! :) I miss digging in the dirt.
