Happy First Day of Fall! It’s hard to believe that it’s already Fall, but I am excited and so ready. I love the cooler weather, wearing long sleeves and sweaters, drinking hot cider…the list could go on. One of my favorite fall activities is driving out to see the leaves turn. My in-laws were in town this past weekend, and that’s how we spent the majority of our time. On Saturday, we drove out to Georgetown and then up Guanella Pass. I had never been there before, but will definitely go back. The views were stunning and there are quite a few options for hiking.
Aren’t the leaves gorgeous? We timed it just right this year…you could see that some of the aspen had already turned and lost their leaves and a few were still green, but most were a beautiful yellow or gold.
Sunday we spent in the Rocky Mountain National Park. The aspen were beautiful there as well, but the draw for us was the elk. It’s close to rutting season when all of the elk come down out of the mountains and we hoped to see a few. Well, we had only been in town for all of 2 minutes when the traffic had come to a standstill. There were 3 elk walking next to the highway in Estes Park, as well as 6 deer. Later, up in the park, we drove around Moraine Park in hopes of a sighting. At first we only saw trees out in the meadow, until we pulled out the binoculars and realized that those were antlers. There were several herds sitting out in the meadow, maybe around 30 elk in all. Unfortunately, we didn’t bring the telephoto lens and so there are no decent photos. All in all, it was the perfect way to start fall.
